What To Wear

Your own sense of style…
I get asked often, “what should I wear?” and I always say, “be yourself, but be mindful.”  Mindful of certain things!  Whether it’s for an engagement session, portrait/headshot session, etc., pay close attention to your “own sense of style,” or even what you imagine it to be!  If you are two or more, then you would want to blend a bit, but be careful about being a white or a black “blob.”  I really appreciate the same color scheme, but if you can go for it in a less matched way and be unique, while blending? then that’s what will make you comfortable and the pictures look unique!  It’s good to feel “yourself” or even your “fun self.”  For individuals, it’s the same.  Be YOU!  Bring a few changes of clothes that describe you in different ways.  Pick colors that look great on you and highlight your skin and eyes.  A special note for headshot clients:  It’s ABOUT YOUR FACE.   Never wear all black or all white on top.  Agents hate that.  They are attracted to solid colors that pop your eyes and skin and you want to stand out amongst the masses!  Also, for girls and guys,  watch the cleavage and bare chests (agents don’t like that either! and parents of seniors don’t usually like that!) Accessories are fun, but “less is more,” so limit them to just earrings, or just a necklace or just a bunch of rings, etc.  Hats, scarves, boots, jackets, etc., are also fun to add character (if you love those things).  If you are trendy, then “not all trends at once!!”  Girls watch for bra straps showing and “camis,” and maybe just avoid that style altogether, unless you bring a sweater or something to go over it!  Guys, watch the “bright white sneakers!”  As my dad used to say, “you’re all feet.”  It happens.  Look for toned down sneakers, rainbows, walking shoes, “Sperry-type” shoes, etc.   When it comes to “hair,” if you’re going to cut your hair into a brand new style? or style it different? do it a several weeks before the shoot.  Same for coloring hair, etc.  Give yourself a chance to be happy with it.  For guys, shaving should not be done right before the shoot, in case of rashes and cuts!!  Give it several hours for sure!!!  Make sure your exposed feet are looking clean (and nails) and same for hands and nails!  You don’t have to be crazy-groomed, but clean is good.  For instance, I don’t do my hand-nails, because of my work, but I like them clean and with clear polish on them.  I don’t want to avoid dirty feet and grimy nails unless we’re “in character” for a theater production!  Last, but not least……. makeup:  A clean, fresh, natural approach is the way to go.   Use a good blendable foundation and don’t go crazy on the eyes and mouth, unless it’s some type of fashion, fantasy, theater, etc. shoot.
